Welcome to Khromian
Khromian is a custom Debian installation image meant to bring an easy and stable Debian-based rolling release to the masses. While boasting many changes under the hood compared to Debian, we especially aim to provide an accessible operating system for those who are familiar with Windows.
Khromian is not developed by any organization, it's a personal project. It comes with zero warranty.
What to expect
Khromian focuses on having sane defaults that work for anyone. It has the flexibility to fit whatever your needs may be, while still shipping with a roaring and comfortable out-of-the-box configuration.
- We use the KDE Plasma desktop, offering a simple yet powerful workflow, familiar to Windows users.
- We include as much firmware as possible to ensure that even the most problematic systems work fine.
- We use a base of Debian Testing, providing a fully rolling experience while still being reliable enough to be your daily driver.
- Tools for gaming are ready out-of-the-box, with Steam, Lutris, and Feral GameMode all being preinstalled.
- Intel and AMD GPUs have all their functionality enabled by default (including 32-bit libraries and Vulkan support), while the NVIDIA driver is easily installable if needed.
- Need space? Our transparent compression maximizes the lifespan of your drive and increases its capacity. Khromian only requires 3GB of storage!
- PipeWire offers low latency, crisp sound, easy wireless audio, and simple configuration for advanced audio software such as Ardour. No more fiddling with configuration files, no more JACK servers, no more complex terminal commands to reroute audio.
- NoHang is included to preserve responsiveness when your system is running out of memory. It uses its desktop-tuned configuration.
- Many more changes, almost all of which are listed in the "changelist" section below.
